Market Tales

Heirloom Tomatoes – a flavour sensation

I didn’t want to go to the markets today. It was raining. I wanted to lie in bed and listen to the rain reviving my garden. But I went and I am so glad I did. My neighbors at Mulgowie Farmers Market were Jamie and his daughter Millie. They were selling Granddad Malcolm’s heirloom vegetables. What a colourful mix!  I have been searching for a supplier of big old fashioned ox heart tomatoes and there they were.  Such a delight!

I usually have a nap when I get home from a market because I really don’t like early mornings but I just had to have an experiment with these tomatoes. They really are sensational.  They smell like tomatoes! They cut like mousse and they taste divine!  I am planning a special new version of Tomato preserve to feature these wonderful fellows.  Something a bit Spanish. Available in January.  Until them you can buy my Tomato Kasundi, Tomato & Tamarind Chutney, Tomato & Eggplant Chutney or just plain Tomato Relish.
